Gary Shelton Resolution

R E S O L U T I O N

 

 

         WHEREAS, Gary F. Shelton is retiring on August 31, 2003, from his administrative position at The Texas Union at The University of Texas at Austin, an institution to which he will have devoted thirty-five years of faithful service; and

         WHEREAS, This exceptional individual has the distinction of being a bona fide native Texan, having been born in Dallas; and

         WHEREAS, He elected to pursue his higher education at The University of Texas at Austin wherefrom he graduated in 1960 with a triple major in anthropology, biology and chemistry; and

         WHEREAS, Mr. Shelton pursued studies at the graduate level at the University until he accepted the position of Research Manager in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University in 1963; and

         WHEREAS, In that capacity he coordinated and managed projects under grants from the National Institutes of Health for seven years; and

         WHEREAS, He left the University’s employ for a period of four and one-half years during which time he served as Division Coordinator and Senior Management Information Specialist at the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory in Austin, Texas; and

         WHEREAS, On September 16, 1975, Mr. Shelton returned to the employment of his beloved University of Texas as an administrative officer at The Texas Union, where he has amassed a twenty-eight year record of distinguished and valuable service; and

         WHEREAS, In that capacity Mr. Shelton’s first major initiative was the development of the operational guidelines and bid procedures for the renovation and restoration of The Texas Union over a three-year period from 1974 to 1977, a massive project that he oversaw to successful completion; and

         WHEREAS, In the early 1980s Mr. Shelton developed the guidelines and procedures that led to the successful establishment of the Texas Union MicroCenter, a revenue-generating operation that provided critical financial support to Union operations as well as invaluable service to the University of Texas community for fourteen years; and

         WHEREAS, During this same period Mr. Shelton served as the formal advisor to a student group, the Texas Union Management Committee, that distinguished itself under his direction by not only initiating and providing a range of services to The Texas Union but also by consistently winning Outstanding Committee awards; and

         WHEREAS, From the early days of his tenure at The Texas Union Mr. Shelton became known for his deep love of and appreciation for the architecture, history and traditions embodied in the Texas Union building, as exemplified by his extremely popular guided tour of the Union building and by his fierce protection of any and all items of historical significance within it; and

         WHEREAS, Throughout his career Mr. Shelton has demonstrated that he is diligent, loyal, hard-working, responsible, unfailingly courteous and respectful of others and in all respects a person who evokes admiration from all who know him; and

         WHEREAS, Mr. Shelton has also demonstrated, from the day he first set foot on the University of Texas at Austin campus, that he deeply loves and is wholly devoted to that institution and particularly to that part of it known as The Texas Union; and

WHEREAS, As Mr. Shelton now approaches his well-deserved retirement from state service he can look back with tremendous pride and satisfaction on an exemplary career; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 78th Texas Legislature hereby congratulates Gary F. Shelton on his exemplary career in the service of higher education and the State of Texas and extends its best wishes for a fulfilling and rewarding retirement; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Shelton as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
