Roaring Sun is the Folk Rock & Cosmic Country project of Austin-based songwriter Larry Llodra. With its debut album Turn and Wave, Roaring Sun channels a heartfelt collision of introspective folk and the sweeping gestures of classic rock, crafting songs that ache and soar in equal measure. It’s the sound of vulnerability wrapped in lush, cosmic twang—a journey through life’s wreckage and redemption. Imagine Blood on the Tracks filtered through Big Star’s intimate melancholy, with Gram Parsons offering his tender, haunted drawl.
Turn and Wave is an album born not from comfort but from unraveling. Burned out by corporate life and a health scare, Llodra walked away from it all, embarking on a year-long odyssey across continents. These weren’t the polished travels of leisure but a raw search for self in the wake of disillusionment. The result is a collection of songs steeped in the grit of lived experience, embracing life’s messiness.
Recorded live over five days at Austin’s Cedar Creek Studios, Turn and Wave trades modern polish for organic immediacy. Producer Bob Hoffnar leads an ensemble of accomplished players, including drummers Danny Frankel (Fiona Apple, k.d. lang) and Stephen Bidwell (Black Pumas), lead guitarist Billy Masters (Suzanne Vega, Alejandro Escovedo), and bassist Michael St.Clair (Polyphonic Spree, Okkervil River). Hoffnar’s pedal steel weaves a spectral shimmer throughout, elevating the album with a dreamy, otherworldly edge. No click tracks, no overcorrection—just raw, unfiltered performances that feel alive.
Before Roaring Sun, Llodra cut his teeth as the frontman of UVH, an indie noise rock outfit known for its textured chaos. But with this project, he’s turned that energy inward, creating something quieter, more reflective, yet no less powerful. Turn and Wave is a testament to resilience, a soundtrack for those wrestling with their place in the world.
Turn and Wave drops in late Spring 2025 and is for anyone who’s ever felt lost on their way back to renewal and self-acceptance. With live shows around Austin and a nationwide tour on the horizon, Llodra continues to record and write more music for a follow-up release. Roaring Sun is just getting started.
